Mineral trioxide aggregate as material of choice in endodontic therapy

Abstract: Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a material with broad indications in endodontics. Currently, this material is used for pulp capping, pulpotomy, as apical barrier in teeth with necrotic pulp and open apex, and in the treatment of various root canal perforations. By comparing the biological response of pulp tissue capped with calcium hydroxide and MTA, the superiority of MTA has been indicated. The bridge of hard tissue formed under MTA prevented the irritation of pulp. Histological studies of pulpotom… Show more

“…MTA was considered the first patented hydraulic calcium silicate-based cement (CSC) for endodontic use [ 2 ]. It has been used for treating a variety of root canal perforations, apexification, pulpotomy, and the treatment of the vital pulp (pulp capping) [ 3 , 4 ]. A 10-year follow-up study performed by Daniele [ 5 ] revealed that MTA can be effectively used to treat the exposed pulp by direct pulp capping with a 92.5% success rate.…”

“…Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been used in paediatric dentistry as a pulp capping agent in young permanent teeth, as a pulpotomy medicament in primary and permanent teeth, as an apical barrier in immature non-vital teeth, in the coronal fragment of fractured roots, and as a repair material for perforation and resorptive defects 6,7 .…”

“…Brushite cement with a formulation based on H 3 PO 4 and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) presents some advantages, such as lower cost, faster preparation, better control of chemical composition and reactivity and improved physical and chemical properties [12]. Notwithstanding, their short setting time and low mechanical properties may limit their clinical application [7].…”
