Mining-Metallurgical Sources of Pollution in Eastern Serbia and Environmental Consciousness

Abstract: The ethics of environmental protection is based on the moral responsibility of a man not to endanger his living environment because it is the only way for creating the conditions for a better life quality. Environmental consciousness (EC) is characterized by a high awareness about the environment, especially in urban areas with mining-metallurgical sources of pollution. Raising EC in such environments causes acceptance and ecological and social responsibility. A mining-metallurgical complex plant represents an… Show more

“…The Bor Copper Mining and Smelting Complex is located near the city of Bor and is one of the largest centers for copper mining and smelting in Europe. The copper-smelting plant together with the three mines (Open Pit Bor, Open Pit Veliki Krivelj, and Open Pit Cerovo), constitute RTB Bor, which pose serious threats to environmental health for this region and Serbia via airborne pollutants, discharged mine effluents, waste rock impoundments, and seepage from tailings [ 8 , 10 ].…”

“…In accordance with the 2019 Pollution and Health Metrics: Global, Regional and Country Analysis elaborated by Global Alliance on Health and Pollution (GAHP), Serbia ranks first in Europe and ninth in the world in terms of environmental pollution [ 9 ]. The city of Bor and the surrounding areas—an important mining hub—are one of the major centers of non-ferrous mining, smelting, and processing in Serbia and South East Europe [ 10 ]. With copper mining dating back to Roman times and a history of modern exploitation of copper ore spanning more than one century, this region has become a high-profile environmental hot spot in Europe [ 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…These operations have generated large amounts of mineral processing tailings. The Bor copper mine located in the eastern part of Serbia started exploiting the high grade, 17% Cu, copper ores in 1903 [6] the open-pit mining started in 1912 and continued until 1986 with decreasing copper grades [7].…”

“…the soil surrounding the old flotation tailings pond is contaminated with metallic elements, with particularly high values obtained for iron, copper, and arsenic concentrations 2 of 9 [12][13]. Overall, a century of mining has left its mark on the Bor area landscapes being one of the most polluted places in Serbia [7].…”

“…Besides, anthropogenic activities have triggered unprecedented environmental changes on a global and on a local scale. Especially anthropogenic activities strictly available in metallurgical and mining areas (Carvalho, 2017;Urošević et al 2018) such as Kryvyi Rih basin (Bielyk et al 2020;Savosko et al, 2019a;Savosko et al, 2020).…”
