miR-638 Inhibits immature Sertoli cell growth by indirectly inactivating PI3K/AKT pathway via SPAG1 gene

Abstract: Numerous studies have demonstrated that microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in cell growth, apoptosis and spermatogenesis. Our previous study showed that miR-638 was differentially expressed in sexually immature and mature testes of Large White boars. Here we reported that sperm-associated antigen 1 (SPAG1) was a direct target gene of miR-638. Moreover, miR-638 inhibited cell proliferation and cell cycle, and promoted apoptosis of porcine immature Sertoli cells. Key genes including phosphorylated phosphati… Show more

“…In men with Sertoli cell‐only syndrome, the miR‐574‐5p expression level was significantly lower compared to controls (Abu‐Halima, Backes, et al, ), indicating that sustained lower expression of miR‐574‐5p is pivotal for the progression of infertility. MiR‐638 plays a role in pig spermatogenesis by regulating immature Sertoli cell growth and apoptosis by targeting the SPAG1 gene (Hu et al, ). The miR‐320 family is predicted to target the protocadherin alpha proteins that are expressed in the mammalian testes.…”

“…For instance, miR-1285 and miR-762 promote porcine sertoli cells by regulating ring finger protein 4 (RNF4) gene expression [94]. Similarly, miR-638 plays roles in pig spermatogenesis by regulating immature Sertoli cell growth and apoptosis by targeting the expression of sperm-associated antigen 1 (SPAG1) gene [95].…”
