Chamaenerion angustifolium L. widely known as fireweed, has significant natural resources in Ukraine. It has long been used in folk medicine as a sedative, analgesic, astringent, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antisclerotic, wound healing, and diaphoretic agent. These properties are the result of the availability of many groups of biologically active compounds such as flavonoids, hydroxycinnamic acids, tannins, ascorbic acid, polyphenols, macro- and microelements. The aim of the study was to determine the content of fatty acids and monosaccharides of the herb. The qualitative composition and quantitative content of these biologically active compounds were determined using a GC/MS method. The results of the analysis showed that the herb of fireweed has monosaccharides, such as D-ribose, D-arabinose, D-mannose, D-glucose, D-galactose, and Myo-inositol. D-glucose presented in raw materials in the highest amount, it is content in the herb was 11.23 mg/kg. Among fatty acids, the mono-, polyunsaturated and saturated acids were determined. The content of polyunsaturated fatty acids of the total fatty acids was 53.19%, monounsaturated – 4.92%, and saturated – 41.89%. Linolenic, palmitic, and linoleic acids dominated among the determined twelve fatty acids, their content was 1.82 mg/kg, 1.74 mg/kg, and 1.10 mg/g.

Systematic Review on the Effectiveness of Essential and Carrier Oils as Skin Penetration Enhancers in Pharmaceutical Formulations

Oils, including essential oils and their constituents, are widely reported to have penetration enhancement activity and have been incorporated into a wide range of pharmaceutical formulations. This study sought to determine if there is an evidence base for the selection of appropriate oils for particular applications and compare their effectiveness across different formulation types. A systematic review of the data sources, consisting of Google Scholar, EMBASE, PubMed, Medline, and Scopus, was carried out and, following screening and quality assessment, 112 articles were included within the analysis. The research was classified according to the active pharmaceutical ingredient, dosage form, in vitro/in vivo study, carrier material(s), penetration enhancers as essential oils, and other chemical enhancers. The review identified four groups of oils used in the formulation of skin preparations; in order of popularity, these are terpene-type essential oils (63%), fatty acid-containing essential oils (29%) and, finally, 8% of essential oils comprising Vitamin E derivatives and miscellaneous essential oils. It was concluded that terpene essential oils may have benefits over the fatty acid-containing oils, and their incorporation into advanced pharmaceutical formulations such as nanoemulsions, microemulsions, vesicular systems, and transdermal patches makes them an attractive proposition to enhance drug permeation through the skin.

Reactive Extraction of 4 Hydroxybenzoic Acid Using Tri-n-Butyl Phosphate in Toluene and Petroleum Ether at 298 K

4-Hydroxybenzoic acid has vivid applications in the polymer, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. Therefore, it is worth separating 4-hydroxybenzoic acid from effluent streams of different industries such as the olive oil mill, pulp and paper, and wine industry. Reactive extraction is an efficient and economic technique for the separation of carboxylic acids. The experiments for the separation of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid from aqueous solution were performed using tri-n-butylphosphate (TBP) in toluene and petroleum ether at 298 K. The investigations were quantified in terms of the distribution coefficient (K D), extraction efficiency (E %), loading ratio (Z), and equilibrium complexation constant (K E). The maximum E % and K D values were 97.14% and 24.84 in toluene and 95.14% and 15.55 in petroleum ether with TBP, respectively. The TBP–toluene system was found better than the TBP–petroleum ether for the separation of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. The minimum solvent-to-feed ratio and the number of stages for the extraction process were also calculated, and the number of stages was seven for the TBP–toluene system and six for the TBP–petroleum ether system for a maximum TBP concentration of 0.758 mol kg–1.
