Mixed reality game prototypes for upper body exercise and rehabilitation

Abstract: This research demonstration consists of an integrated hardware and software platform developed for rapid prototyping of virtual reality-based games for upper body exercise and rehabilitation. The exercise protocol has been adopted from an evidence-based shoulder exercise program for individuals with spinal cord injury. The hardware consists of a custom metal rig that holds a standard wheelchair, six Gametraks attached to elastic exercise bands, a Microsoft Kinect, a laptop and a large screen. A total of 21 pro… Show more

“…Although it is difficult to make an accurate comparison, because the first [15], uses a diffe rent device to track movement, and the second [16], is oriented to complex pose comparison in 3D motion data. We cannot compare results with other systems that use Kinect [8][9][10][11][12][13] because they do not provide perfonnance results. During the tests we also established a threshold value for posture recognition.…”

“…Finally, with the aim of fa cilitating even more the interaction of users appears another trend that advocates the use of Kinect, a motion capture device that tracks user movements without any physical contact. Among the proposals that fo llow that trend we can distinguish those 978-1-4673-5801-9/13/$26.00 ©2013 IEEE 444 that use Kinect Xbox version [8][9][10] and those that use Kinect for Windows, a version that was launched in February 2012. In this last case, the proposals that can be fo und are mainly commercial products such as [1 1-13] which do not show many technical details concerning their internal behavior and are oriented to specific pathologies.…”

“…Gotsis et al demonstrated a mixed reality game for upper body exercise and rehabilitation using Kinect. 45 Pedro and de Paula causin proposed to use Kinect in conjunction with rehabilitation robotics. 93 The bene¯t of combining the Kinect device with a robot is the reduction of hardware cost when multiple cameras are needed to overcome occlusions.…”

“…Skyfarer has emerged after iterating numerous prototypes that incorporated individual elements of a shoulder exercise protocol using a first-generation metal rig [Gotsis et al 2012]. Skyfarer requires calibration of the game to the physical dimensions and muscle strength of individual players.…”
