Mobility Control Experience in the Joffre Viking Miscible CO2 Flood

Abstract: This paper discusses mobility control in the Joffre Viking field miscible CO 2 flood. Since 1984, three injection strategies have been tried: water-alternating-C0 2 (WAC0 2 ), continuous CO 2 , and simultaneous CO 2 and water. The studies showed that simultaneous injection results in the best CO 2 conformance. COrfoam injection has also been investigated.

“…This occurs primarily because of reservoir heterogeneity and also the density and viscosity contrast between the injected gas and the reservoir fluids. Injected gas tends to flow preferentially through high permeability streaks (channelling) while viscosity and density differences result in viscous fingering and gravity override respectively [5][6][7].…”

“… Canada actually reports CO 2 floods in Joffre and Pembina fields [18,151]. Operators and government institutions of Canada have been very active evaluating CO 2 -EOR potential during the last decade [152,153].…”

“…CO2 injected into this medium-to high-permeable sandstone lens reservoir contacted only the upper third of the formation, with segregated flow as close to the injector as 15 m. A foam pilot was done to attempt reducing gravity override by in-depth foam propagation [17,18]. The test pattcrn was nearing the end of its economic Iife.…”
