Model Optimization and Parameter Estimation with Nimrod/O

Abstract: Abstract. Optimization problems where the evaluation step is computationally intensive are becoming increasingly common in both engineering design and model parameter estimation. We describe a tool, Nimrod/O, that expedites the solution of such problems by performing evaluations concurrently, utilizing a range of platforms from workstations to widely distributed parallel machines. Nimrod/O offers a range of optimization algorithms adapted to take advantage of parallel batches of evaluations. We describe a sele… Show more

“…Before this, significant work was performed by automating the optimisation of the design process and greatly increasing computing power by getting access to the Cluster/Grid [38] using the Nimrod/O tool [39][40][41], as described in a previous study [42]. This enabled the designer to manipulate various combinations of the design variables and better understand different design scenarios that could be used in the initial design phase of the aerodynamic shape design problem.…”

“…The Aegis UAV design case reported in this paper was obtained by means of automated optimisation using the Nimrod/O tool [64][65][66] for the Aegis UAV with two tail configurations; U-tail and inverted V-tail. This enabled the designer to manipulate various combination of the design variables and better understand different design scenarios [43,44].…”

“…DAKOTA [82] is another solution that provides stochastic tools and an extensible interface for the integration of UQ methods to existing numerical codes. Nimrod/O [83] enables the execution of concurrent evaluations, while providing a range of search algorithms. In order to facilitate the execution of workflow ensembles, WMSs need to support parameter tuning so that researchers can run multiple optimizations with different starting points, controlling the parameter selection to minimize the prediction error.…”
