Model United Nations and Deep Learning: Theoretical and Professional Learning

Abstract: This article demonstrates that the purposeful subject design, incorporating a Model United Nations (MUN), facilitated deep learning and professional skills attainment in the field of International Relations. Deep learning was promoted in subject design by linking learning objectives to Anderson and Krathwohl's (2001) four levels of knowledge or cognition: factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognitive. Students demonstrated improvement in all four areas; however, this article focuses on outcomes in the con… Show more

“…Students faced quite a challenging learning environment on a number of fronts. The subject was designed using lessons from the literature on simulation and on teaching MUNs with the aim of promoting deep learning (Engel, Pallas, & Lambert, 2017). The learning outcomes in brief, were for students to develop: a sound understanding of the role and functions of the UN system and the key challenges it faces; capacity to write briefing papers on complex international challenges using primary data; negotiation and presentation skills; and capacity to critically reflect upon personal and societal assumptions.…”

“…Although it is only a simulation, students are expected to be able to demonstrate the diplomacy skills of the regions/countries they represent. The MUN method deals with developing writing, negotiation, communication, attitude, knowledge, critical thinking, and linguistic skills [12][13][14][15][16].…”

“…Studies about MUN that come from English program area are not popular yet like what has been studied by Dittmer (2013) and Engel et al (2017) . One study tried to popularize it is a case study from Bastaki (2012).…”
