Large-scale integration of converter-based renewable energy sources (RESs) into the power system will lead to a higher risk of frequency nadir limit violation and even frequency instability after the large power disturbance. Therefore, it is essential to consider the frequency nadir constraint (FNC) in power system scheduling. Nevertheless, the FNC is highly nonlinear and nonconvex. The <a>state-of-the-art</a> method to simplify the constraint is to construct a low-order frequency response model at first, and then linearize the frequency nadir equation. In this letter, an extreme learning machine (ELM)-based network is built to <a>derive </a>the linear formulation of FNC, where the two-step fitting process is integrated into one training process and more details about the physical model of the generator are considered to reduce the fitting error. Simulation results show the superiority of the proposed method on the fitting accuracy.

Solar Irradiance Nowcasting for Virtual Power Plants Using Multimodal Long Short-Term Memory Networks

The rapid penetration of photovoltaic generation reduces power grid inertia and increases the need for intelligent energy resources that can cope in real time with the imbalance between power generation and consumption. Virtual power plants are a technology for coordinating such resources and monetizing them, for example on electricity markets with real-time pricing or on frequency reserves markets. Accurate short-term photovoltaic generation forecasts are essential for such virtual power plants. Although significant research has been done on medium- and long-term photovoltaic generation forecasting, the short-term forecasting problem requires special attention to sudden fluctuations due to the high variability of cloud cover and related weather events. Solar irradiance nowcasting aims to resolve this variability by providing reliable short-term forecasts of the expected power generation capacity. Sky images captured in proximity to the photovoltaic panels are used to determine cloud behavior and solar intensity. This is a computationally challenging task for conventional computer vision techniques and only a handful of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods have been proposed. In this paper, a novel multimodal approach is proposed based on two Long Short-Term Memory Networks (LSTM) that receives a temporal image modality of a stream of sky images, a temporal numerical modality of a time-series of past solar irradiance readings and cloud cover readings as inputs for irradiance nowcasting. The proposed nowcasting pipeline consists of a preprocessing module and an irradiance augmentation module that implements methods for cloud detection, Sun localization and mask generation. The complete approach was empirically evaluated on a real-world solar irradiance case study across the four seasons of the northern hemisphere, resulting in a mean improvement of 39% for multimodality.

This article emphasizes the impact of coordinated energy storage (ES) and flexible alternating current transmission (FACTS) devices in the combined voltage and frequency control of multi-area systems having hydro, thermal, geothermal, and solar thermal power plants. Appropriate realistic constraints are equipped with both hydro and thermal units. A novel fuzzy logic controllerbased cascade PI and PID with filter coefficient (N), FCPI-PIDN controller is proposed and optimized various controller parameters using artificial flora algorithm. Comparative analysis of FCPI-PIDN, Cascade PI and PIDN (CPI-PIDN), and PIDN controllers show the superiority of the FCPI-PIDN controller to others. Integration of ES devices (ESDs), such as redox flow battery (RFB),capacitive energy storage (CES), and superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) indicates that the incorporation of ESDs enhance the system performance and RFB is superior to SMES and CES. Moreover, integration of FACTS devices, such as interline power flow controller (IPFC), thyristor control series capacitor (TCSC), and unified power flow controller (UPFC) indicates the incorporation of FACTS devices improve the system dynamic and coordination of IPFC-RFB provide better response than TCSC-RFB and UPFC-RFB. Investigation reveals that the optimal location of RFB is Area 1 and IPFC is in between Areas 1 and 3. Sensitivity analysis validated the robustness of the FCPI-PIDN controller.
