Modelling and Analysis of Vibrations in a UAV Helicopter with a Vision System

Abstract: The analysis of the nature and damping of unwanted vibrations on Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) helicopters are important tasks when images from on‐board vision systems are to be obtained. In this article, the authors model a UAV system, generate a range of vibrations originating in the main rotor and design a control methodology in order to damp these vibrations. The UAV is modelled using VehicleSim, the vibrations that appear on the fuselage are analysed to study their effects on the on‐board vision system by… Show more

“…Several important sources of vibration on helicopter are identified by Cai et al [6] and Ceruti et al [8]. Elsewhere, a comprehensive vibration analysis of the UAV helicopter is pursued by Plasencia et al [28]. In the MAV environment, the structural components may vibrate due to mechanical and aerodynamic effects.…”

“…As the basis and predecessor of compound UAVs, the manned compound helicopter has shown great advantages in VTOL and flight stability at high speed with heavy loading, since it was first proposed by American researchers in 1960s [14,15]. The researchers oversea prefer to study the flight aerodynamics mainly aimed at rotors without ducts, vibration solving issues and control problems rather than the analysis of the configuration optimization [16][17][18]. In China, the researchers in Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics mainly focus on the studies of compound helicopters assembled with single lifting airscrew, fixed side wings and single vector tail ducted thruster including aerodynamics, interference coupling characteristics and hovering ability [19][20][21].…”

“…10 Plasencia et al modeled a UAV system, generated a range of vibrations originating in the main rotor and designed a control methodology based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system to damp the unwanted vibrations. 11 From the aforementioned contributions, it can be seen that the random vibrations occur during the flight or landing of the UAV for several reasons-aerodynamic excitation, system malfunctions and external factors such as atmospheric turbulence.…”
