Modelling of environmentally assisted material degradation in the crack phase-field framework

Abstract: The simulation of crack propagation was conducted with a diffusive crack model in a variational framework. More, the physically sound introduction of mass transport and coupling mechanisms due to environmentally assisted effects could be realised in this framework. The objective consists of the application of the phase-field approach towards the simulation of environmentally assisted material degradation with the advantage of a non-required predefined crack path and a mesh-independent non-local formulation tha… Show more

“…In this sense, for example, the simulation of crack propagation was conducted with a diffusive crack model in a variation framework, and where consideration is given in Falkenberg. 21 In any case, the investigated materials are very common in use in engineering practice precisely due to their behavior under load. These materials are characterized by a high level of ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, creep resistance to some extent, and fatigue behavior.…”

“…PFM can also be used for hydrogen-dependent fracture energy to simulate HAC [37][38][39][40], with many results reported. However, previous computational models apply the PFM standard of Bourdin et al [22].…”

“…Finite element method is increasingly developed for the prediction of crack propagation in diverse engineering applications. [1][2][3] Brittle fracture of solids means the brutal deterioration of their mechanical strength due to mechanical or thermal loading. The modeling of crack paths is one of the most complicated tasks of brittle fracture mechanics.…”
