Modelling the Interaction between Air Pollutant Emissions and Their Key Sources in Poland

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between key sources of air pollutant emissions (sources of energy production, factories which are particularly harmful to the environment, the fleets of cars, environmental protection expenditure) and the main environmental air pollution (SO2, NOx, CO and PM) in Poland. Models based on MLP neural networks were used as predictive models. Global sensitivity analysis was used to demonstrate the significant impact of individual network input variab… Show more

“…Local governments may ban the use of solid fuels for central heating in dusty areas. Moreover, there are no significant legal solutions in the transport sector to restrict old vehicles that contribute to harmful air pollution [49]. Due to Poland's climate, the majority of the energy sold to homes (more than 65% in 2018) is used for heating in winter [50].…”

“…In Poland, the main sources of air pollution are emissions from fuel combustion, mainly from the energy industry and individual households and transportation [42]. Poland is among the leading countries in Europe in geopolitical terms with the highest inland consumption of hard coal in 2021, with consumption totaling 69,981,742 thousand tonnes, followed by Turkey at 40,926,606 thousand tonnes, Germany at 37,372,647 thousand tons and Ukraine at 35,110.9 thousand tonnes.…”

“…However, there are no regulations for installations used in households, i.e., solid fuel stoves, boilers or fireplaces. Additionally, in the field of transport, there are no significant legal solutions limiting old vehicles, which are responsible for the production of harmful air pollutants [94].…”
