Experimental data suggest that Resveratrol, a compound found in grapes and other fruits may influence cell proliferation and apoptosis. The aim of our experiments was to study the effect of Resveratrol on tumor cell cultures and an endothelial cell culture in order to examine the effect of various doses of this compound on active cell death and cell proliferation. Human tumor (HT-29, SW-620, HT-1080) and endothelial (HUV-EC-C) cells were treated with various doses of (0.1 to 100.0 µg/ml) Resveratrol in vitro. Cell number, apoptotic and mitotic index was measured 24, 48 and 72 h after treatment. Low doses (0.1-1.0 µg/ml) of Resveratrol enhance cell proliferation, higher doses (10.0-100.0 µg/ml) induce apoptosis and decrease mitotic activity, which is reflected in changes of cell number. Resveratrol influences dose dependently the proliferative and apoptotic activity of human tumor and endothelial cells. The possible role of formaldehyde in the mechanism of action of Resveratrol is discussed.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been used for several decades to treat menopausal discomforts. However, in the light of recent studies that draw attention to the potential hazards of conventional HRT, various attempts have been undertaken to search for alternatives to classical HRT. Phytoestrogens are claimed to be capable of positively influencing menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes. We designed a long-term study of 3 months to assess the effects of subcutaneous and orally fed 17 -estradiol (E2), as well as the actions of resveratrol (RES) on pituitary function in female rats. Our results have demonstrated that RES binds with a 10-fold lower affinity to estrogen receptor (ER)-than to ER . The data from the in vivo study revealed that a dosage of 5 µg and 50 µg RES/kg bodyweight per day given to ovariectomized (OVX) rats achieved serum levels of 1·0 and 8·1 µM respectively. Long-term treatment of OVX rats with RES revealed no estrogenic potential on pituitary function in vivo as assessed by LH and prolactin secretion and by regulation of mRNAs for LH , LH , and GnRH receptor. Subcutaneous treatment with E2 in silastic capsules exerted stronger effects on LH and prolactin secretion, as well as on LH , LH , GnRH receptor, and ER mRNA regulation compared with orally applied estradiol benzoate despite comparable serum levels. Levels of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) mRNA in the pituitary were increased following OVX and attenuated by longterm E2 treatment, whereas RES did not modulate AhR mRNA expression.

Is there a role for wine in cancer and the degenerative diseases of aging?

Population aging is associated with the increased incidence cancer and of degenerative diseases. Population aging is occurring on a global scale, with faster aging projected for the coming decades than has occurred in the past. Globally, the population aged 60 years and over is projected to nearly triple by 2050, while the population aged 80 years and over is projected to experience a more than fivefold increase. Increased numbers of older individuals may have implications for associated expenditure on income support, housing and health services, although a healthy, independent older population can also form a valued social resource, for example in providing care for others, sharing skills and knowledge, and engaging in volunteer activities. Simple dietary measures such as moderate wine consumption to supplement a healthy exercise and nutrition routine, or as an adjunct to prescription medicines when appropriate, are thus needed to maintain an aging population. The role of wine in cancer and the degenerative diseases of aging is thus discussed.
