Modulation Methods for Direct and Indirect Matrix Converters: A Review

Abstract: Matrix converters (MCs) allow the implementation of single-stage AC/AC power conversion systems (PCS) with inherent bidirectional power flow capability. By avoiding the typical DC-link capacitor, MCs have the potential to achieve higher power density with a more reliable operation and less maintenance when compared with conventional two-stage AC/DC/AC PCS. For these reasons, matrix converters have been receiving significant attention from the academic sector but have not yet been implemented on a large industr… Show more

“…The MC is represented as a two-level converter connected by an imaginary DC link in order to employ the SVPWM: the first level acts as an input rectifier with the current link and the second level acts as an output voltage source inverter [17,26]. For further information, the interested reader is directed to [2,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. Power circuit topology of the 3×3 IMC.…”

“…Tis adaptation reduces converter size, upsurges converter reliability, as well as provides four-quadrant operation [1][2][3]. Due to these salient features, MCs have been used in many applications such as AC drives, marine propulsion systems, aerospace industry, and renewable energy systems [4]. Recently, MCs have gained increased interest in wind energy applications [5].…”

“…On the other hand, sparse MC (SMC) is a member of MC family, in which indirect power conversion is realized using rectifer and inverter stages separated by a fctious DC link without any DC storage element [9]. Te control complexity of the power semiconductor switches in SMC is a challenging task, since switching synchronization between rectifer and inverter stages is needed [4]. SMC has also found application areas in WECS.…”

“…Matrix converter (MC) achieves direct AC-AC power conversion without intermediate energy storage elements. The MC features high power density and high efficiency [1][2][3], which has been demonstrated from both academia and industry. Therefore, it has been widely considered a promising topology to the widely used AC-DC-AC converter and back-to-back PWM converter.…”
