Molecular Biodiversity of Selected Mango Cultivars Based on DNA Sequences of Internal Transcribed Spacer Region

Abstract: The mango (Mangifer indica L.) is an important species of the family Anacardiaceae and is one of the most important crops cultivated commercially in many parts of the world. Hence, a better understanding of the phylogeny in this species is crucial as it is the basis knowledge of improving its genetic resources which is beneficial for breeding programs. Phylogenetic relationships among 13 mango cultivars from Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan were carried out by comparing DNA sequence data sets derived from the In… Show more

“…Molecular markers are powerful tools for investigating the diversity within and between the populations; as they are neutral in terms of phenotypes, remains unaffected by environmental conditions, and, despite the high degree of heritability, they show limited polymorphism (Naghavi et al 2004;Sargazi et al 2016). Internal Transcribed Sequence (ITS) marker have not been frequently used in genetic assessment of mango (Yonemori et al 2002;Hidayat et al 2013, Gitahi et al 2016Nashima et al 2017). The ITS regions are located between the 18S and 28S rRNA genes and also have distinct advantages over other molecular markers.…”

“…Although mango is the economically most important fruit, the classical breeding and lack of quality cultivars have been the main obstacle in the high production and development of this fruit. ITS marker offers several useful features such as high copy number, small in size, possess highly conserved flanks, rapid concerted evolution and universality of primers (Hidayat et al 2013). Hence the present study was aimed to use ITS1.2 regions to decipher the phylogenetic relationship and genetic diversity of Iranian Mangifera indica L. landraces.…”
