Molecular characterization of group A rotavirus found in elderly patients in Ireland; Predominance of G1P[8], continued presence of G9P[8], and emergence of G2P[4]

Abstract: Rotavirus is a major cause of gastroenteritis in young children worldwide. There have been several recent reports concerning rotavirus isolation from adults, particularly in the elderly, presenting with gastroenteritis. In this study, the authors report on rotavirus outbreaks in five separate elderly care facilities between April, and June 2011 in Ireland. The following genotypes were detected; G1P[8] (n = 5/11), G2P[4] (n = 2/11), and G9P[8] (n = 2/11). Thus, similarities to previous reports were found in tha… Show more

“…Previous studies have described RVA in adults pre‐ and post massive introduction of RVA vaccination [Nakajima et al, ; Morillo et al, ; Gunn et al, ; Anandan et al, ; Kirkwood and Roczo‐Farkas, ; Kittigul et al, ; Luchs et al, ; Tatte et al, ; Anderson et al, ; Pacilli et al, ]. In our data, G12P[8] was observed in high prevalence in adults, in accordance with previous reports reinforcing the idea that adults may have more RVA infections than previously reported.…”

“…Group A rotavirus is the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in young children and animals worldwide [13]. The virus particle has an 11-segment double-stranded RNA genome encoding six structural viral proteins (VP1–4, VP6, VP7) and six non-structural proteins (NSP 1–5/6) [4].…”

“…Rotaviruses cause acute diarrhea mainly in children, but RVA acute gastroenteritis has also been reported among adults, including epidemic outbreaks, travel‐related disease, and sporadic cases in the community [Griffin et al, ; Anderson and Weber, ; Feeney et al, ; Luque Fernandez et al, ; Tatte et al, ; Gunn et al, ]. Yet, information on the genetic and epidemiologic characteristics of the RVA strains that infect adults is limited, because adults rarely need hospital care, and usually they are not enrolled in field studies.…”
