Morphology and mechanical properties of poly(ethyleneoctene) copolymers obtained by dynamic packing injection molding

Abstract: The morphology and mechanical properties of poly(ethylene-octene) copolymers (POE) obtained by dynamic packing injection molding were investigated by mechanical tests, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical tests found that only POE with low octene content and high molecular weight show apparent response for external shear field. Further investigation has been done by DSC, FT-IR, and SEM in order to make cl… Show more

“…Shear can often result in orientation in polymer matrix. 2D-WAXD was also conducted to examine the structure of polymer matrix under strain for different composites. In the wide-angle region (Figure b), scattering peaks from the amorphous polymer (2θ = 17.6°, inter-planar spacing of 0.446 nm) and crystalline TPU soft-segments (2θ = 19.0°, inter-planar spacing of 0.413 nm) are visible.…”

“…The amorphous portion of the random ethylene-octene segment contributes to the elasticity [ 6 , 9 ]. Its flexibility and mechanical properties, like synthetic rubber, combined with the melt processability, make the ethylene-octene elastomer a very good material with many industrial applications [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. However, its large permanent deformation and other disadvantages limit its application.…”

“…These structures are also influenced by the processing conditions, as for a styrene-butadiene block copolymer with 32% polystyrene obtained by spin casting from toluene, a lamellar structure is obtained, while a hexagonal cylindrical structure is achieved by extrusion due to the annealing during the process [4]. It has been established that there is a close correlation between these morphologies and the physical-mechanical properties corresponding to SDS block copolymers [5][6][7][8][9][10].…”
