Mortality of Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans during or soon after the emergence of worker and drone honeybees Apis mellifera L

Abstract: Summary — In a naturally infested colony a strong correlation between levels of falling mites and the emergence of honeybee brood was found. When comparing the number of mites falling between emerging worker and drone brood with known infestation levels, the mite fall was 2-3 times higher from worker than from drone cells. It was estimated that around half of the falling mites originate from mites that died within the sealed cell with the other half dying shortly after bee emergence. About 50% of the fal… Show more

“…Positive correlations between number of mites on bottom boards with amount and emergence of brood have been reported (Lobb and Martin, 1997;Beetsma et al, 1999). However, there were no differences in the number of combs with bees and with brood between our two groups of colonies.…”

“…Hence, there is no clear evidence from this study that the Bee Gym increases mite fall through enhanced grooming by the bees. The presence of brood has a large effect on mite fall (Branco et al, 2006;Lobb & Martin, 1997). When brood is present, the majority of mites on drop boards are those associated with emerging brood (Lobb & Martin, 1997), with hygienic behavior and phoretic mites making up the remainder.…”

When brood is present, the majority of mites on drop boards are those associated with emerging brood (Lobb & Martin, 1997), with hygienic behavior and phoretic mites making up the remainder. As the Bee Gym is predicted to target phoretic mites, any effect would be to increase this portion of mite fall only.…”

“…Lobb and Martin (1997) estimated that around 50% of fallen dead mites die within sealed brood cells, the rest mainly shortly after emergence. This may explain Wallner's deduction that if 60% of fallen mites show damage inflicted by bees, those bees should be capable of survival without mite treatment (Dews, 2008;Wallner, 1990aWallner, , 1990b.…”
