MRI evaluation of body composition changes in wrestlers undergoing rapid weight loss

Abstract: Rapid weight reduction reduced the wrestlers' cross-sectional areas of muscle and fat tissues, which tended to recover through rehydration after the weigh-in. These results suggest that rapid weight reduction of wrestlers induced changes in different regions of the body.

“…The degree of change in the amount of fat resulting from weight changes differs among specific regions of the body [6] and it is important to understand if changes in different body regions affects the accuracy of the equipment. In our sample we did not verify a relation between %FM, FM and FFM in trunk, arms or legs with the differences of the methods.…”

“…Differences related to body mass, stature, and body composition may significantly influence fighting strategies (including technical and tactical skills) and consequently the physiologic profile of these athletes [4,5]. Thus, the ability of researchers and coaches to accurately estimate minimal changes in fat mass (FM) and fat-free-mass (FFM) is crucial in sports with weight categories (i.e., martial arts, wrestling, weight lifting, and combat sports) [6]. …”

“…Drastic weight fluctuations over short periods of time may commonly occur in these athletes throughout the year. 3,30 It is possible, however, that the abnormal behaviors occur only in pre-competitive periods and thus, do not reflect the athletes' regular eating patterns. 10 This is not the case for athletes competing in sports in which leanness is thought to improve performance.…”

“…Hereby, since weight losses are mostly achieved by performing the methods of food and fluid intake limitations in short time periods, this case especially leads to decreases in body fluid amount and muscle mass. Because of this, it is significant for assessing body composition to determine an athlete's physical situation during weight loss (Kukidome et al, 2008). This type of quick weight loss applied by the wrestlers bring significant objections and anxiety in terms of health (Alderman et al, 2004).…”
