“…The vitread endfoot membranes of all studied vertebrates (except anurans) were shown to express orthogonal arrays of membrane particles (OAP; Reale et al, 1974;Wolburg and Berg, 1988;Richter et al, 1990;Wolburg et al, 1992). Thus, it was no surprise to observe OAF' in replicas of tree shrew Miiller cell endfoot membranes.…”

“…Although one may assume that most of the physiological mechanisms are similar in Mü ller cells from urodeles and anurans, there might be also differences between the two groups in respect to membrane physiology. For example, such differences may be due to the lack of orthogonal arrays of particles in frog Mü ller cells (Wolburg et al, 1992) as these structures were shown to be constituted by aquaporin-4 water channels Rash et al, 1998;Yang et al, 1996) and perhaps by K ϩ channels (Nagelhus et al, 1999). Furthermore, the stalk processes of Mü ller cells from urodeles are much thicker than those of anuran Mü ller cells.…”

“…It is also notheworthy that the frog retina is overlaid by supraretinal (i.e., intravitreal) blood vessels; this corresponds to an accumulation of mitochondria in the Mü ller cell endfeet (Uga and Smelser, 1973). Finally, it is pointed out that Mü ller cell endfoot membranes in frogs (Rana esculenta and Xenopus laevis) lack the so-called orthogonal arrays of particles, while such membranes express these particles in all other vertebrates investigated, including urodeles (Wolburg et al, 1992;Wolburg, 1995).…”

“…The existence of functional gap junctional coupling has been demonstrated by dye injection into Müller cells in the retina of Ambystoma mexicanum (Mobbs et al, ), connexin43 was identified in Necturus maculosus (Ball and McReynolds, ) and Cynops pyrrhogaster (Japanese fire belly newt) (Umino and Saito, ). An interesting result has been described by Wolburg et al (): Orthogonal arrays of particles have been found in species from the group Urodela , but not from the group Anura . See [Table (Part B)] for a comprehensive overview of data from amphibian Müller cells.…”
