Currently, foundation piles for inhabited areas are often constructed using a continuous flight auger, which is a cost-and timeefficient technology that does not require stabilization of the borehole wall; the steel bar reinforcement is embedded after the concrete has been poured. However, this reinforcement operation can lead to severe construction and structural issues. Thus, several improvements to this technology have been proposed since its first application in the 20th century, such as the use of more fluid concretes. Nevertheless, steel and polymers are emerging as a potential replacement for steel bars in concrete reinforcement for several types of structures and building components, with identified and quantified benefits from a sustainability perspective. Accordingly, this paper proposes and validates a multicriteria decision-making approach designed with multidisciplinary experts within the construction field to assess the sustainability index of concrete pile foundations. The results of a case study enable us to conclude that polymeric fiber-reinforced concrete piles are the most sustainable due to their cost-structural efficiency ratio, high durability, and minimal risks during construction. Steel fiber-reinforced concrete alternatives were also found to be more sustainable than traditional reinforced concrete. Nonetheless, these results are unrepresentative of the current practice as direct costs were found to be the main driver in the decision-making processes, while other costs and both environmental and social indicators are disregarded. This justifies the urgency to provide sustainability-driven decision-making approaches capable of objectively quantifying the satisfaction degree of economic, environmental, and social indicators involved in the analysis.

La evaluación de las competencias transversales adquiridas a lo largo de la formación universitaria es un objetivo fundamental para garantizar el adecuado desarrollo de los alumnos. Con los recientemente establecidos Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible, la demanda de competencias transversales orientadas a tal fin es cada vez mayor y, su desarrollo y evaluación, más urgente. Ante la falta de consenso en cuanto a cómo determinar el grado de adquisición de estas capacidades, se propone un procedimiento objetivo basado en la resolución de casos de estudio, combinados con la aplicación de la comparación pareada de criterios del Proceso Analítico Jerárquico de decisión multicriterio. La aplicación de este proceso permite determinar, de forma objetiva, la coherencia implícita de los alumnos en sus juicios y ofrece, por lo tanto, una herramienta valiosa para evaluar la claridad con la que los alumnos perciben la sostenibilidad y sus implicaciones en el desarrollo de su futura práctica profesional y, por ende, su competencia para afrontar estos nuevos retos que se plantean en el futuro próximo

Evaluation of Reinforced Adobe Techniques for Sustainable Reconstruction in Andean Seismic Zones

This research presents a methodological process for selecting the most appropriate construction technique for the reconstruction of housing after a seismic disaster in a rural and heritage context. This process, which is applicable to a large part of the Andean region, incorporates sustainability criteria to guarantee the economic, social and environmental balance of the intervention. The methodology was developed on a case study: the Colca Valley in Arequipa, Peru. In 2016 an earthquake affected this zone, where traditional unreinforced earthen buildings suffered serious damage. The objective of this research focuses on comparing six traditional building techniques strongly related to self-building: four techniques for adobe housing—reinforced with cane (CRA), wire mesh (WMRA), geogrid (GRA) and halyard ropes (HRRA)—and two techniques for masonry buildings— confined (CM) and reinforced (RM). For this purpose the authors used the Integrated Value Model for Sustainable Assessment (MIVES), a Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) model used to compare alternatives by assigning a “sustainability index” to each evaluated construction technique. This research study includes two types of variables: quantitative, such as economy ($/m2) and environmental impact (kgCO2/m2), among others, and qualitative, such as perception of safety, respect for the urban image and popular knowledge. The research results show that reinforced adobe techniques are a viable and competitive option, highlighting the cane reinforced adobe technique (CRA), with a value of 0.714 in relation to industrialized materials such as masonry. This technique has the same safety characteristics, but at almost half the price, with the additional advantage of using traditional materials and construction methods, having less environmental impact and showing better thermal performance in cold climates.
