Multidrug resistant and ESBL-producing Salmonella spp. isolated from poultry

Abstract: Salmonella spp. is one of the main agents responsible for foodborne infection in humans, and products of poultry origin are the most common infection sources. Studies have shown the occurrence of antimicrobials resistant Salmonella spp. in animal products. The Extended Spectrum ?-Lactamase (ESBL) are enzymes that confer to bacteria the ability to hydrolyze cephalosporin with an oximino side chain and monobactams. This study aimed to investigate antimicrobial resistance profile, identify phenotypes and genotype… Show more

“…ESBLs Salmonella spp. have been detected in chickens ( Dierikx et al, 2010 ; de Souza et al, 2019 ) and other livestock ( Riano et al, 2006 ). ESBL Salmonella isolations from wildlife are uncommon but ESBL S. Infantis isolated from owls have been reported ( Fuentes-Castillo et al, 2019 ).…”

“…The antibiotic resistance genotypes as bla CMY2 have been found in poultry farms in Brazil (Biffi et al, 2014) and in Colombia, where 168 isolates from different poultry production levels (farms, slaughter, and retail) were positive to bla CMY2 gene (Castellanos et al, 2018). The presence of Extended Spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) codified by bla CMY2 and other genes from this group reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics such as ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and cefotaxime by the hydrolyzing of the β-lactam ring preventing the union with the penicillin-binding protein (PBP) (De Souza et al, 2019;Kong et al, 2010).…”

“…These genes were found in poultry farms from Egypt with values of 97.3% and 5.3%, respectively (Abdel-Maksoud et al, 2015) and sul2 gene in isolates from chickens sold at retail in Colombia (57.4%) (Cortés et al, 2017). The tetB gene was found in broiler chickens from Portugal (45.4%) (De Souza et al, 2019) and in chicken carcasses retailed in Colombia (42.5%) (Cortés et al, 2017). This gene codes for a tetracycline resistance protein, which promotes the elimination of tetracycline from the inside of cells by an energy-dependent efflux pump (Grossman, 2016).…”

“…Os isolados de Salmonella oriundos de produtos de origem avícola são frequentemente considerados fenótipos com resistência múltipla a drogas (BRITO et al, 2020;SOUZA et al, 2019a). Essa realidade é considerada um problema mundial de saúde pública, visto que há possibilidades de genes de resistência dessas bactérias de origem alimentar serem veiculados e incorporados à microbiota humana, reduzindo a eficácia do tratamento com antibióticos (MAIA, 2020).…”
