Multifunctionality of agricultural water: looking beyond food production and ecosystem services

Abstract: The concept of multifunctional agriculture recognizes important potential benefits of agriculture in addition to the production of food: environmental services (wildlife habitat, pleasing landscape), food security, rural livelihoods and regional economic vitality, stable households and communities, cultural heritage and identity, and religious, spiritual, and aesthetic values. Agricultural water can also be considered through a multifunctional lens using the same logic, but also adding functions that are speci… Show more

“…These are described variably as studies of farmer-managed or community irrigation systems, water users associations, peasant irrigation systems, traditional acequia institutions, and by other terms [4,[34][35][36][37]. More recently, the ecohydrological interactions, environmental values, and multi-functionality of these gravity flow systems have been the subject of new research that requires interdisciplinary approaches by teams composed of hydrologists, ecologists, agronomists, and human culture scientists [15,[38][39]. Field-based analysis is still needed at watershed and regional river basin scales in semi-arid environments worldwide.…”

“…In Myanmar, 90% of harnessed water is used for agriculture. 23 A key priority within the agricultural water sector is the more efficient use of water through 24 on-farm improvement and water management training (Groenfeldt 2006 However, large local variations in yields have been recognized. 33…”

“…Agricultural land provides a variety of ecosystem services, such as open space (Kline & Wichelns, 1994, 1996a, 1996bAdelaja et al, 2006;Adelaja & Lake, 2007;Plantinga & Miller., 2001), wildlife habitat (Nickerson & Lynch 2001), and groundwater recharge (Smith 2006;Fernald et al, 2007;Fernald & Guldan, 2006). This constellation of amenities is also addressed in the agriculture multifunctionality literature (Drake, 1992;Randall, 2002: Rønningen et al, 2004Groenfeldt, 2005). Table 1 displays results from valuation work on agriculture and some other cultural ecosystem services.…”
