The growing concern about global warming and the consumption of fossil fuels has driven in recent decades the use of biomass as a renewable feedstock. In this context, vegetable oils, the corresponding fatty acids (FAs) and esters (FAEs) have primary importance: their esterification and transesterification lead to innovative products, that find application in several sectors, from biofuels to solvents, from surfactants to cosmetic ingredients and plasticizers. Lewis acid catalysis represents the most accredited methodology for developing processes of esterification and transesterification in line with sustainability requirements. The results available so far reveal the prevalent catalytic role of Zn(II) salts and coordination compounds, due to their beneficial eco-toxicological profile, combined with an appropriate acidity, finely tunable through selective functionalization. This review provides a picture of the state of the art in this important sector of biomass valorization. Roberto Esposito received his PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2018 at the University of Naples Federico II under the supervision of prof. F. Ruffo. He is researcher at the Department of Chemical Science of the University of Naples Federico II and his main research topics are W (VI), Zn(II) and Fe(III) based catalysts for conversion of biomasses and chemistry of tetra-coordinated and penta-coordinated complexes of Pt(II). Massimo Melchiorre graduated in Chemical Sciences in 2018. He is Board Member of ISusChem s.r.l., innovative start-up and university spin-off at the Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche of the Università di Napoli Federico II. Company activity consists in biomass conversion and bio-based products development.

Biodiesel Production Using Solid Acid Catalysts Based on Metal Oxides

The development of solid acid catalysts, especially based on metal oxides and different magnetic nanoparticles, gained much awareness recently as a result of the development of different nano-based materials. Solid acid catalysts based on metal oxides are promising for the (trans)esterification reactions of different oils and waste materials for biodiesel production. This review gives a brief overview of recent developments in various solid acid catalysts based on different metal oxides, such as zirconia, zinc, titanium, iron, tungsten, and magnetic materials, where the catalysts are optimized for various reaction parameters, such as the amount of catalyst, molar ratio of oil to alcohol, reaction time, and temperature. Furthermore, yields and conversions for biodiesel production are compared. Such metal-oxide-based solid acid catalysts provide more sustainable, green, and easy-separation synthesis routes with high catalytic activity and reusability than traditionally used catalysts.

RESUMO A substituição parcial do óleo diesel pelo biodiesel tem contribuído para o aumento da disponibilidade de glicerina no mercado mundial. Cerca de 10 m3 e glicerina são obtidos para cada 100 m3 de triacilglicerídeos (principal componente de óleos vegetais e gorduras animais) processados na principal rota tecnológica para produção do biodiesel, a transesterificação alcalina em meio homogêneo. Naturalmente, a glicerina obtida como coproduto no processo precisa ser aproveitada em processos complementares. Isso usualmente é possível após a glicerina passar por vários processos de purificação. Com a intenção de evitar tais processos complementes para aproveitamento da glicerina, estamos propondo a síntese do biodiesel por interesterificação do óleo de soja com acetato de metila, uma rota tecnológica que possibilita a obtenção da glicerina na forma de triacetina, ou seja, já quimicamente modificada. Os catalisadores utilizados no processo foram o hidróxido duplo lamelar (HDL) Zn2 Al/NO3 e o estearato de zinco comercial (EZ), um carboxilato lamelar. Ambos estes materiais lamelares ainda não haviam sido testados como catalisadores em reações de interesterificação. Foram obtidas conversões em ésteres metílicos de ácidos graxos de 50,8±4,2 % e 82,9±1,0 % (m m-1) utilizando os catalisadores EZ e HDL, respectivamente; quando as reações foram conduzidas utilizando 5 % de catalisador (m m-1), por 10 h de reação e razão molar acetato de metila: óleo de soja de 24:1.
