Multiple Herbicide Resistance Evolution: The Case of Eleusine indica in Brazil

Abstract: The occurrence of multiple herbicide resistant weeds has increased considerably in glyphosate-resistant soybean fields in Brazil; however, the mechanisms governing this resistance have not been studied. In its study, the target-site and nontarget-site mechanisms were characterized in an Eleusine indica population (R-15) with multiple resistance to the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors, glyphosate, imazamox, and paraquat. Absorption and translocation rates of 14C-diclofop-methyl14C-imazamox and 14C-gly… Show more

“…Moreover, additional mutations in this sequence were not found, with position 102 occupied by threonine (codon ACT), which also makes weeds resistant to glyphosate. It confirms that the mechanism of resistance of this population from Primavera do Leste, MT, Brazil, does not involve changes in the 300-bp EPSPS fragment, which encompasses the positions 102 and 106, in contrast to the other two E. indica populations in Brazil that had a SNP mutation at position 106 (Pro-106-Ser) conferring resistance to glyphosate (Takano et al 2018; Vázquez-García et al 2021).…”

“…Eleusine indica is a highly invasive and adaptive global agriculture weed 1 with evolution of resistance to multiple herbicides 2–5 . E. indica is widely distributed in southern China especially in Guangdong Province, where it can flourish for up to 2–3 generations a year and is the worst weed in both farm and non‐farm situations.…”
