“…Clinicians should also be aware that exposure to radiation treatment may give rise to BVS and certainly increases the chances of sporadic VS 13–15. One study of children undergoing radiation treatment for enlarged tonsils found that nearly 2% of 3013 developed a schwannoma or meningioma with seven (0.23%) developing multiple tumours some fulfilling NF2 criteria 14. A follow-up study of 3112 showed that 43 had developed VS far in excess of expected numbers 15.…”

“…In this same cohort of patients, there were 66 (2.2%) neural tumors, 67 (2.3%) salivary tumors, and 93 (3.1%) carcinomas of multiple tissue types. In a follow‐up study of 3,013 of this same cohort receiving 7.5 Gy in three divided doses over 3 weeks, 85 neural tumors were identified in 70 (2.3%) patients 16 . These included 15 meningiomas, 27 cranial nerve schwannomas, and 1 malignant neural sheath tumor.…”

“…10 Another study found an increased incidence of meningiomas and schwannomas in 3013 patients treated with radiotherapy before the age of 16, mostly for enlarged tonsils. 18 Seventy (2.3%) of the patients developed neural tumours, with seven developing multiple schwannomas or meningiomas. The higher incidence of secondary tumours than in the study of tinea capitis 10 reflects the higher doses, which averaged 7.5 Gy.…”
