Multitrait restricted and desired gains selection indices designed to change growth and body composition in mice1

Abstract: Effectiveness of restricted and desired gains index selection to change growth and body composition was tested in mice. Replicate lines were selected within full-sib families as follows: RI, restricted index to increase 12-week body weight (BW) and hind carcass weight (HC) with no change in right epididymal fat pad weight (EF); DG, desired gains index to increase BW and HC and decrease EF and right subcutaneous fat pad weight (SF) in designated proportions; RS, random selection. Realized heritabilities of inde… Show more

“…Little response to antagonistic selection has been reported by M c C arthy and D oolittle (1977) from mice, by R icard (1975) from B roilers and by A bplanalp (1963) from turkeys. E isen (1993) selected for eight generations for increase in weights (body weight and hind quarter proportion) and against fat (epididymal fat pad, subcutaneous fat). While the changes of weights agreed reasonably with expectations, they were actually greater than these; the changes in fat traits were only very little, in the desired direction in the case of the subcutaneous fat, and in the undesired one in the case of the epididymal fat pad.…”

“…changing the weight at a given age while keeping it constant at another, seems to be somewhat more promising (M c C arthy and D oolittle 1977). E isen (1993) attempted to avoid changes in fat traits while selecting for increased weights. While these changed somewhat more than expected, restriction on fat weights failed and both fat measures increased, albeit only a little.…”
