“…In Europe, cereal contamination with mycotoxins varies depending on the geographic position and agroclimatic conditions. For example, AF, OTA, and FB prevail in the Southern region, which has a hot/wet Mediterranean climate, while DON and ZEA prevail in the Northern region, which has a colder climate [11,12,15,50,51,59,60,61,62,63,64,65].…”

“…Mycotoxins comprise one of the most significant fungal contaminants in food stuffs . Among mycotoxins, aflatoxins (AFs) form the secondary toxic metabolites of the Aspergillus genius that induce a significant threat to human health, including hepatotoxic, teratogenic, mutagenic, genotoxic and carcinogenic effects . AFB 1 is one of the most potentially damaging of the AFs and is classified as a human carcinogen (Group I) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer .…”

“…There is a huge abundance of literature related to the presence of mycotoxins in food and feedstuff. In the last decade, studies from various countries including Canada [30], Serbia [3,31,32,33,34], Portugal [11,35], Russia [36], Romania [37,38], Belgium [39], Italy [40,41], Spain [42,43,44], Germany [45], Poland [46], Sweden [47], Croatia [48], Lithuania [49], South Korea [50], Japan [51], Turkey [52,53], Brazil [54,55], the UK [56,57], and several African countries [58,59] have reported the presence of ochratoxins and tricothecenes in wheat, flour and/or bread. In Lebanon, literature on mycotoxin contamination of cereals is scarce [60,61,62,63].…”
