Mycotoxins as human carcinogens—the IARC Monographs classification

Abstract: Humans are constantly exposed to mycotoxins (e.g. aflatoxins, ochratoxins), mainly via food intake of plant and animal origin. The health risks stemming from mycotoxins may result from their toxicity, in particular their carcinogenicity. In order to prevent these risks, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon (France)-through its IARC Monographs programme-has performed the carcinogenic hazard assessment of some mycotoxins in humans, on the basis of epidemiological data, studies of cancer… Show more

“…Particularly dangerous are the species Aspergillus, Mucor, and Rhizopus. They cause several diseases described as examples of the most aggressive mycotic infections with a high mortality rate [36,[43][44][45]. Besides these infectious species, species with a high toxicity also were identified in the piles.…”

“…The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), through its IARC Monographs Programme, has performed carcinogenic hazard assessment of agents in humans based on experimental and clinical reports [7]. In this assessment, agents are classified into five groups (Group 1, 2A, 2B, 3 and 4).…”
