Throughout the last 2 decades a shift from a cod-to a sprat-dominated system occurred in the upper trophic levels of the Central Baltic Sea. This was caused by a decline in the cod stock, due to recruitment failure and high fishing intens~ty, resulting in a decrease in predation pressure on sprat. Concurrently with the lowest cod stock size on record, sprat reached biomass values of above 2 X 106 t in 1992, being relatively stable afterwards. Besides predation mortality through cod and in recent years also an increasing fishing pressure, cannibalism on eggs may be a compensatory process limiting the reproductive success of sprat and hence contributing to the population regulation in the Central Baltic. Based on sprat stomach sampling on 21 cruises between March 1988 and July 1996 cannibalism on sprat eggs was investigated in the Bornholrn Basin, one of the main spawning areas of Central Baltic sprat. Using a model of gastric evacuation to estimate daily food intake rates and a Virtual PopulationIExtended Survivor Analysis for computing predator population sizes, egg cannibalism rates were estimated. These were compared to egg abundance data from ichthyoplankton surveys and to preliminary estimates of seasonal egg productions. The study revealed significant interannual differences in the intensity of sprat egg cannibalism with considerable predation in 1990 to 1992 (> 15 % of the egg abundance during peak spawning and >60% of the seasonal production) and a reduction in most recent years (<16% of the corresponding abundance and production). As a possible reason for these differences a combination of changes in the vertical overlap of predator/prey and variability in the food environment were identified. Shortcomings of the applied methods and the possible impact of cannibalism on the reproductive success and population development of sprat m the Central Baltic Sea are discussed.

RESUMO -Avaliar a dieta, o ritmo alimentar e a taxa de consumo diária de alimento dos peixes pode permitir estimar a relação entre a alimentação e o crescimento, a pressão de predação sobre espécies de presas, a limitação alimentar durante estações do ano e a competição intra e interespecífica. Estas informações são desconhecidas para C.monoculus na Amazônia Central e aqui são apresentados dados sobre a ecologia trófica desta espécie durante quatro estações hidrológicas. A área de estudo incluía três lagos de várzea na Amazônia Central, durante os períodos de agosto de 1997 a julho de 1998. Os estudos da dieta e do ritmo alimentar foram feitos através das análises dos conteúdos estomacais. A taxa de evacuação gástrica foi estimada experimentalmente. O consumo diário de alimento foi calculado a partir dos modelos de Elliot & Persson e de Eggers. A intensidade de alimentação da espécie foi baixa durante a seca. A dieta do C. monoculus foi basicamente piscívora e composta de nove famílias de peixes e uma de camarão, apresentando variações no decorrer das estações hidrológicas e com o tamanho do peixe. A taxa de evacuação gástrica foi 16,9% h -1 . O consumo diário de alimento, que não foi diferente nas quatro estações hidrológicas, teve média igual a 2,23% do peso corporal. Este valor é baixo comparado a outros estudos estimados para peixes tropicais. Indicando que esta espécie come relativamente pouco.Palavras-chave: Cichla, Amazônia, peixes, alimentação, consumo diário Feeding and Daily Ration of Cichla monoculus in Central Amazon.ABSTRACT -Information on food, feeding rhythm and daily ration of fish are useful to food limitation. This type of information was lacking to Cichla monoculus in its natural habitats in the Central Amazon floodplain and here it is presented data on the feeding ecology of this species during one hydrological cycle. The study included three floodplain lakes sampled analysis and the gastric evacuation rate was measured experimentally. The daily ration was the dry season. The diet consisted basically of fish, comprising 9 families of fish but one family of shrimp occurred in 20% of the samples. The gastric evacuation rate was 16.9%h -1 . The daily ration was not different between seasons and averaged 2.23% bw. This is a relatively low value compared to other piscivores.

Invasive red king crabs feed on both spawned-out capelin and their eggs

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that the invasive red king crab Paralithodes camtschaticus may hamper capelin (Mallotus villosus) recruitment through egg consumption. Field studies (2005, 2006), laboratory experiments (2011), and models of consumption were applied. To explore the response of the predator to prey density, crab abundance and capelin egg density were estimated in stratified study areas. Stomach evacuation rates of capelin eggs in red king crab stomachs were investigated experimentally, and the average evacuation time estimated to be 5.38 h at 2.9°C. The average evacuation time was applied to a consumption model where uncertainty in input values was assessed by Monte Carlo simulation. Estimated egg consumption values were 0.04% and 2.23% of the total number of eggs in studied spawning areas, in 2005 and 2006, respectively. The high variability in quantity of eggs in stomachs generated most of the uncertainty in consumption estimates. Red king crabs did not show an aggregative response to capelin egg density, nor was the magnitude of egg consumption correlated with egg density. Dead post-spawn capelin was a major and more important prey than eggs for red king crab. Our findings imply that semelparity in Barents Sea capelin may lead to predator swamping, thereby reducing capelin egg consumption by the invasive red king crab.
