This article addresses a few archaeological finds from the earliest stage of the Great Migration Period (late fourth to the first half of the fifth century AD) in the territory of the Western Roman Empire related to Central Europe by origin, which could testify to the migration of the Vandals and the Suebi to the Roman West in 406 AD. These finds comprise different types of crossbow brooches discovered in the Roman provinces in Gallia, Spain, and North Africa, which parallels originate from the lands to the north of the Danube, in the zone where the Vandals and the Suebi lived by the moment of the migration to the West in 406 AD. Besides, some features of the funeral rite discovered in the early Great Migration Period in Eastern Gallia, particularly ritually destroyed weapons, meet with analogies in the cemeteries of Central European barbarians, particularly in the Przeworsk culture. These archaeological pieces of evidence were partially related to the arrival of the Vandals and the Suebi to the Roman Empire’s territory in 406 AD, and also reflected the presence of the Central European barbarians in the Roman military service.

The study of burials of the early Merovingian era in such sites as Arcy-Sainte-Restitue, Chassemy, Breny, Saint-Martin-de-Fontenay, and Vicq shows that the new groups who settled in northern Gaul in the fifth and early sixth centuries can be identified primarily by female costume elements of heterogeneous origin. Despite their small numbers, these people certainly played an important military and social role, as evidenced by the burial of the nobility. A community inventory uncovered Alemanni, Thuringian, Lombard, Ostrogoth, Danube-German, Anglo-Saxon and Visigoth elements. Their appearance at the same time as the creation of the Merovingian kingdom is not surprising. Indeed, this fact has been well established in archaeological studies of other "barbarian" areas, in particular Burgundy, Ostrogothic Italy, and Kievan Rus". In these regions nascent royal (princely) power relied on foreign military groups with no connection to the local population in order to ensure loyalty to the ruler. This article focuses on a case study of the Spanish Visigoths who settled in northern Gaul.Keywords: burials, Visigoths, Merovingian kingdom, northern Gaul. Bien que peu nombreux, ils ont sans aucun doute joué un rôle, militaire et social, comme en témoignent les tombes de « chefs ». Le mobilier de ces communautés comporte des éléments alamaniques, thuringiens, lombards, ostrogothiques, germaniques danubiens, anglo-saxons et wisigothiques. Leur apparition, au moment même de la naissance du royaume mérovingien, n"a rien d"étonnant. En effet, il s"agit d"un phénomène archéologiquement bien connu dans d"autres royaumes « barbares », comme en Burgondie, en Italie ostrogothique et jusqu"à la Russie de Kiev, où le pouvoir royal naissant s"appuie en partie sur les groupes militaires d"origine étrangère n"ayant pas de liens avec la population locale, assurant ainsi leur fidélité au roi. The article examines the women's costume of the East German tradition, widespread in the North Caucasus and Crimea during the Great Migration Period. It is characterized by one or two big two-plate brooches (more than 10 cm long), worn on the chest or shoulders. In Crimea and Taman, a costume with such brooches in the first half of the 5th century had a prestigious character. In the Caucasus, most of the burials with this costume were found on the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus, primarily at the Durso burial ground near modern Novorossiysk. In the VI century, written sources record the Gothic Tetraxites here. In the Vth century, the Tetraxite Goths moved from Eastern Crimea to the North Caucasus. Outside the coastal zone, large double-plate brooches and their smaller copies are found on sites of the Pashkovsky - Karpovka type, which belonged to the proto-Adyghe population of the Kuban and Black Sea region. A costume with two double-plate brooches was certainly considered prestigious, at least among the Tetraxite Goths who left the Durso necropolis. The graves in which the outfit in question was located usually had quite rich grave goods. The costume with double-plate brooches on the chest and shoulders was of East German origin. Its prototype existed in the Chernyakhov archaeological culture. During the Hunnic period, a costume with small two-plate brooches, which became especially widespread in the Chernyakhov culture and in the northern Black Sea region, where it became the basis for the formation of a “princely” costume with big brooches of a similar shape. In turn, in the second half of the Vth century, this prestigious costume became the prototype of a headdress with large double-plate brooches as a “folk” copy of the prestigious costume of the Hunnic period. This costume became typical of the “middle class” among the East Germans and became widespread in the Barbaricum from the North Caucasus to the Pyrenees.
