Name Types, Polysemy and Contrast Sets in Kakataibo Ethnobiological Nomenclature (Pano, Peru)

Abstract: The present paper examines the different types of plant and animal names used in Kakataibo (Pano, Peru) in terms of the typology of ethnobiological nomenclature proposed by Berlin et al. (1973; slightly modified in Berlin 1992). While doing so, this paper highlights and discusses the major issues posited by the Kakataibo ethnobiological lexicon, which mainly arise due to the pervasive presence of specific-folk generic polysemy in the language. More precisely, this paper shows that the pervasive presence of thi… Show more

“…Three decades later, the concept of Biocultural Diversity was born, coinciding with a renewed academic interest in the synergy between indigenous languages, traditional knowledge (TK), and biological diversity. This concept paved the way for a new wave of research that focused significantly on the use of vernacular/folk names, analyzing them both from a linguistic and TK perspective (Evans 1997;Kakudidi 2004;Turpin 2013;Unasho 2013;Zariquiey 2014). Researchers have demonstrated that folk names are not mere lexemes, but condensed forms of knowledge with multiple applications.…”

“…In this section, I offer a general characterization of the organization of the Kakataibo taxonomic system (see also Winstrand de Robinson 1984, andZariquiey 2014). The following discussion is based on the taxonomic ranks proposed by Berlin et al (1973) and Berlin (1992) (see §3).…”

“…On the contrary, Berlin's research has set methodological standards of continuing relevance for research on ethnobiological classification (e.g. Cardoso et al 2010;Lampman 2007;Ferreira et al 2009;Zariquiey 2014) and some of his theoretical assumptions about taxonomic structures have been widely 8 accepted (e.g. Alves et al 2016; Ellen 2006, 6-8;Hunn and Brown 2011).…”
