Nanosecond spectroscopy of Ce‐doped CaGa 2 S 4

Abstract: Transient optical loss in a CaGa 2 S 4 :Ce 3+ single crystal was observed by a nanosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. When the probe beam with a wavelength of 460 to 620 nm passed through the excited sample, its intensity reduced to about 0.8 times of the intensity after passing through the unexcited sample. A large excited state absorption cross section of a Ce 3+ ion, σ ESA-prb = 7.4× 10 -17 cm 2 was evaluated from the result of the pump beam energy dependence of the ratio of the probe intensity with pumping to… Show more

“…However, it has been reported from the results of nanosecond pump-probe spectroscopy that the excited state absorption (ESA) associated with the transition from the 5d 1 state to the conduction band of CaGa 2 S 4 host is very strong and inhibits light amplification [5,6]. In the report some unresolved issue remained that the decay times of the photoluminescence (PL) by the 5d 1 -4f transition (∼29 ns) and the ESA from the 5d 1 state (∼25 ns) did not agree each other, suggesting that the initial state is different for the PL and ESA processes.…”

“…These processes have been well investigated in Ce 3+ -doped CaGa 2 S 4 by using ultraviolet (UV) and visible (VIS) light [3][4][5][6]. The absorption band of Ce 3+ ions locates at 2.92 eV below the fundamental absorption edge of host CaGa 2 S 4 .…”
