Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery for Liver Fibrosis

Abstract: Liver fibrosis is a reversible disease course caused by various liver injury etiologies, and it can lead to severe complications, such as liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and even liver cancer. Traditional pharmacotherapy has several limitations, such as inadequate therapeutic effect and side effects. Nanotechnology in drug delivery for liver fibrosis has exhibited great potential. Nanomedicine improves the internalization and penetration, which facilitates targeted drug delivery, combination therapy, and thera… Show more

“…As negatively charge nanoparticles and particles larger than 200 nm are removed from the system, this puts a constraint on the physicochemical characteristics of the nanocarrier for mRNA. 87 Various methods have been developed to enhance the delivery of mRNA into hepatocytes. By utilizing the mannose receptors on LSECs, mannose-modified lipid nanoparticles have shown to accumulate in the liver in an in vivo study.…”

“…Nanotechnology in drug delivery offers an exciting and promising field of research for the treatment of chronic liver diseases. Several metal, lipid, polymer, and protein nanoparticles with enhanced features such as prolonged circulation, improved internalization, and pharmacokinetics and reduced toxicity have been developed for treating liver fibrosis 189 . As organelles are prime therapeutic targets in various pathophysiological conditions, including liver fibrosis, the concept of organelle-targeting is gaining increasing attention.…”

“…Similar to the approaches for designing therapeutic peptides, targeting peptides can also be designed by high throughput screening approaches. Conjugating the screened targeting peptides to the surface of nanomaterials provides an efficient method to produce positive targeting nanomaterials [2a,11] …”
