Nasopharyngeal bacterial flora before and after adenoidectomy

Abstract: Fifty patients (23 males and 27 females), with chronically hypertrophied and infected adenoids were subjected to adenoidectomy. Pre- and post-operative nasopharyngeal swabs were taken to study bacterial colonization of the nasopharynx both quantitatively and qualitatively. Twenty healthy controls were included in this study. The swabs were cultured on MacConkey's and Columbia blood agar plates. The rate of isolation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms decreased markedly following operation, while normal i… Show more

“…Talaat et al [13] examined the flora of the epipharnyx in 50 patients before and after adenotomy. They experienced that 1 month after the operation the number of pathogenic bacteria in the epipharynx was reduced by 77% compared to the situation before adenotomy.…”

“…19 Our results are in agreement with those of others showing reduced oropharyngeal carriage of potential pathogens after tonsillectomy. [20][21][22] These studies, however, had smaller sample sizes, 21,22 shorter follow-up periods, [20][21][22] and all lacked a randomly assigned control group. [20][21][22] These results should be interpreted in the light of several limitations.…”

“…Obstructive adenoids on the other hand may cause stasis of nasal secretions with resultant infection 5 . Support for this comes from studies that show a reduction in the number of bacterial pathogens and an increase in commensal microorganisms in the nasopharynx after adenoidectomy 6 …”

“…5 Support for this comes from studies that show a reduction in the number of bacterial pathogens and an increase in commensal microorganisms in the nasopharynx after adenoidectomy. 6 Most agree that an adenoidectomy should be considered for children with CRS who fail medical management. Rosenfeld,7 in 1995, evaluated a step treatment approach for refractory chronic sinusitis in which children were treated initially medically and then those who failed went on to have an adenoidectomy.…”
