Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: understanding its molecular biology at a fine scale

Abstract: Among all cancers, the incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is quite high in the endemic regions. NPC is a head and neck cancer with poor survival rate, and is rare throughout most of the world but common in certain geographic areas, like southern Asia and some regions of North East India (Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram). A clear understanding of its etiology is still lacking, but NPC is widely suspected to be the result of both genetic susceptibility and exposure to environmental factors or Epstein-Bar… Show more

“…Analysis of sex differences sheds light on the reasons for the marked sex difference in NPC incidence in China and the rest of the world [47,48]. The model estimation results indicate that NO 2 has a significantly greater effect on men than on women.…”

“…In addition to heredity and susceptible human genes, a carcinogenic virus, EBV, was detected in 100% of undifferentiated non-keratinizing NPC patient (type II and III) and up to 95% of NPC cases were EBV-positive in its endemic area [ 8 , 68 , 69 , 70 ]. The mechanism of EBV infection in NPC development through carcinogenesis, escape immunosurvilence, epigenetic alteration, and enabling the survival of the tumour has been clearly reviewed in a past study [ 71 ].…”

“…According to the statistics report of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in 2018, more than 70% of new cases are in east and southeast Asia, with an age-standardized rate (world) of 3.0/100,000 in China to 0.4/100,000 in white populations (Bray et al, 2018). The etiology of NPC is multifactorial and is widely suspected to be complex interactions of genetic predisposition, Epstein-Barr virus infection, and environmental factors (Paul et al, 2018).…”
