Natural Products: Potential Source of DPP-IV Inhibitors

Abstract: Out of multiple therapeutic targets, DPP-IV is the lead target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Natural products have always been available for the possible lead generation against various diseases and disorders. In the present review, we have covered various natural sources which have experimentally validated anti-diabetic activity for type 2 diabetic patients with specific focus on the DPP-IV inhibition. Out of all, the most potent DPP-IV inhibitors were found to be resveratrol, luteolin, apigenin and f… Show more

“…There are several reports in the literature on peptides with antidiabetic activity in in vitro tests (DPP-IVi) from food [28][29][30], while relatively few of them have been devoted to meat or meat products. These were mainly in silico studies confirming the potential of meat for processing as a functional food, due to the presence of BP [25,[31][32][33]. Fermented products, in particular, constitute an important group, due to these specific production processes in which peptides are released from the protein structure of the meat, promoting their bioactivity.…”

“…Luteolin can act as a naturally-dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitor and exert protective and beneficial effects on insulin secretion from β-cells [25,26], explaining the anti-diabetic properties of this flavone. In addition, luteolin has been reported to inhibit alpha glucosidase [27], justifying the reduction of blood glucose observed in our study.…”

“…An investigation indicates that a minimum of one-third of the marketed drugs either originated or were derived from different natural resources. Numerous structures of natural product-derived drugs have comprehensively been reported in the literature ( Lagana et al, 2019 ; Singla and Dubey, 2019 ; Singla et al, 2019 ; Singla et al, 2021a ). Paclitaxel (from the Taxus species), camptothecin (from Camptotheca acuminata Decne.…”
