The study aimsed at surveying and analysing the prevailing risks for medical students due to so-called needlestick injuries, I. e., injuries to the skin by handling sharp objects by which blood of patients can be transmitted to the health professional. After introducing preventive measures in a typical German university hospital, a total of 1 903 students of human medicine in their clinical period from 2009 to 2012 (from a total of 2 024 subjects - a rate of 94.0%) were questioned in detail about potential needlestick or other injuries related to their work. The results show that such injuries happen particularly during the clinical period of the medical studies: While only 20.6% of the students indicated a needlestick injury at the beginning of this period, half of the students (50.9%) had experienced at least one injury at the end of the clinical period. The activities mentioned most frequently were taking of blood samples and injections. Needlestick injuries happened most frequently in surgical units, in internal medicine, and in gynaecology. Accidents happened mostly during secondary employment, medical traineeship, or in the context of practical nursing. In consequence, measures for improvement of the primary prevention should start with training on the one hand: Only briefing seems to be insufficient - intensive exercises in using stick-proof instruments seems to be more promising. On the other hand, the comprehensive introduction of stick-proof instruments has to be supported.

Infectious diseases have threatened human health throughout the history. One way of transmission of such diseases is exposing to the needle sticks. The present study was carried out aiming to introduce and investigate risk factors related to needle sticks and ways of prevention of infectious diseases related to needle stick among health care staff.Searching key words including needle sticks, occupational injuries, occupational exposures (OEs) and infectious diseases, the researchers undertook a comprehensive investigation regardless of publication year of the reviewed articles in references including, Medline, CINAHL, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect and Scopus. Then the collected articles were scrutinized and processed.Dealing with needle sticks can transmit more than 20 types of pathogens including Hepatitis B, C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Among health care staff, nurses are more vulnerable compared to others.Exposure to blood and other risky body liquids is a serious risk factor among health care workers. RESUMO: Trata-se de um estudo transversal conduzido num Serviço de Atenção Domiciliar do interior paulista. Teve como objetivos identificar o uso de Equipamento de Proteção Individual, dispositivos de segurança, descarte de materiais perfurocortantes e fatores que dificultam e/ou facilitam o seu uso por profissionais da equipe de enfermagem. A população foi composta por 45 participantes e todos relataram usar Equipamento de Proteção Individual, sendo que 100% referiram usar luvas e os procedimentos frequentes para o uso foram curativos e administração de medicamentos. Apesar de relatarem que não há dificuldade para utilizar os Equipamentos de Proteção Individual e que se preocupam com sua própria segurança, observou-se que a adesão não foi integral. Assim, são necessários estudos futuros capazes de avaliar como ocorre de fato a assistência à saúde dos usuários nos domicílios, para que estratégias de prevenção possam ser identificadas e incorporadas à prática desses profissionais. The objective of the study was to identify the use of personal protective equipment, safety devices, the disposal of sharp objects, and other factors that make difficult and/or facilitate such use by professionals of the nursing team. The population was made up of 45 participants who reported using personal protective equipment. They all reported using gloves, frequent procedures that required their use were dressings and administration of medications. Although it was reported that the participants did not have difficulty in using personal protective equipment, and that they were concerned about their own safety, full adherence was lacking. Therefore, further studies that are able to evaluate how home care services really occur are necessary, so that prevention strategies can be identified and incorporated into professionals' practice.
