Neem (Azadirachta indica) seed kernel extracts and azadirachtin as oviposition deterrents against the melon fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae) and the oriental fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis)

“…In this respect, ethanol, hexane, and acetone extracts of neem seed kernel, which also contain volatile organosulfur compounds, caused a deterrent effect on Helicoverpa armigera (Hü bner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (Schmutterer 1990), Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae), and Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel) (Diptera: Tephritidae) (Singh and Singh 1998). However, the absence of these compounds in aqueous extracts of neem seed kernel, which also deterred both ßy species and C. maculatus (Jenkins et al 2003), is suggestive of the fact that there may be other compound(s) responsible for oviposition deterrence, possibly a common compound, present in both oil and the deoiled part of the seed (Singh and Singh 1998). We suspect that this effect is caused by azadirachtin.…”
