Nephroprotective and antioxidant effect of aqueous leaf extract of Costus Afer Ker gawl on cyclosporin-a (Csa) induced nephrotoxicity

Abstract: Background: Oxidative stress (OS) has been linked to the pathology of a variety of chronic and degenerative diseases. Medicinal plants contain bioactive compounds which are capable of preventing and fighting these diseases. The nephroprotective and antioxidant properties of the aqueous leaf extract of Costus afer (C.afer) against cyclosporine A CsA -induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar albino rats were investigated. Methods: Six groups of five weight-matched animals each, were used for the study. The first and sec… Show more

“…But, unfortunately, its clinical uses are related with some adverse side effects such as hypertension, nephrotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity ( (Inselmann et al, 1994); Andrés et al, 2000). In the present study, the levels of MDA and NO in the kidney tissues homogenates increased by CsA administration; this result is in accordance with some previous studies that documented the ROS formation and oxidative status alteration in CsA cytotoxicity (Ezejiofor et al, 2017;Mostafavi-Pour et al, 2008). Further, the association between CsA treatment and the induction of renal failure as well as with the increase of ROS, MDA, and thromboxane levels in the kidney tissue was confirmed in numerous in vivo and in vitro studies (De Arriba et al, 2009;De Hornedo et al, 2007;Wang & Salahudeen, 1994).…”

“…Cyclosporine A inhibits the proliferation of human gastric cancer cells and can induce their apoptosis (Xing et al, 2016). Beside increased production of ROS, lipid hydroperoxides and a significant decrease in total antioxidants with Cys treatment confirms the role of oxidative stress in Cys induced organ toxicity (Ezejiofor et al, 2016).…”

“…e results reported in by Atere and Akinloye [45] are at variance with what Ezejiofor and Orisakwe also reported when they used lead as the toxic agent [44]. e antioxidant role of C. afer plant extract in these pharmacological activities cannot be overemphasized as there are several published reports to substantiate it [2,7,9,25,40,43].…”
