Network analysis for the visualization and analysis of qualitative data.

Abstract: We present a novel manner in which to visualize the coding of qualitative data that enables representation and analysis of connections between codes using graph theory and network analysis. Network graphs are created from codes applied to a transcript or audio file using the code names and their chronological location. The resulting network is a representation of the coding data that characterizes the interrelations of codes. This approach enables quantification of qualitative codes using network analysis and … Show more

“…Interview transcripts were analyzed using directed, i.e., theorydriven, qualitative content analysis (Hsieh and Shannon 2005) in NVivo 12 (QSR International Pty Ltd 2018), followed by network analysis to identify themes (Pokorny et al 2018). We used Delgado-Serrano and Ramos's (2015) definition of the SES framework as a starting point for the content analysis.…”

“…We grouped interviews by region and used NVivo 12's matrix query tool to export three regional aggregate, weighted, nondirectional adjacency matrices. Following methods adapted from Hoffman et al (2014) and Pokorny et al (2018), adjacency matrices for each region were imported into R version 3.5.1 (R Core Team 2018) and analyzed as regional mental model network graphs using the igraph package (Csardi and Nepusz 2006). The adjacency matrices report the co-occurrence of drivers, behaviors, and outcomes in the grouped interviews for a region.…”

“…Another network metric relevant to the study was outdegree, which represented the number of times a text phrase is used to substantiate another text phrase. Thus, depending on the study's objectives, the researcher can use different network metrics to visualise the relations among text phrases and/or domains (see Pokorny et al, 2018 for a case study using interview transcripts).…”
