Neuroprotective Effects of Pomegranate Juice on Lead Induced Neurotoxicity in Mice

Abstract:
Objective: This study evaluates the potential neuroprotective of the pomegranate juice against chronic intoxication with lead acetate for 3 months.

Methods: Twenty-one female Swiss mice divided into 3 groups were employed in the present investigation. Control group: received drinking water for 90 days, neurotoxic group were exposed to 1000 ppm of lead acetate in the drinking water for 12 weeks, and… Show more

“…Exposure to lead may therefore have led to volume loss in the brain by producing adverse effects on cell signalling, neurotransmission and cell redox state. Examination of the scientific literature shows that there have been very few studies of the effects of PJ on LA‐induced neurotoxicity (Aksu et al., 2016; Gadouche et al., 2017). Aksu et al showed that PJ may provide significant benefits against exposure to lead.…”

“…Rich polyphenolic components present in pomegranate juice caused beneficial effect on behavioural impairments and histopathological changes against chronic intoxication with lead acetate for 3 months. 69 Polyphenols present in methanolic extract of Indigofera oblongifolia leaf significantly protected the neuronal damage which was induced by five days intra gastric administration of lead acetate through oral route. 70 Treatment with tertiary butylhydroquinone which a phenolic organic compound is reflected decrease in MDA level and increase in SOD and GSH content, in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of rat.…”

“…Currently, some medicinal herbs are widely studied as UC therapies such as apples, blackberries, green tea, curcuma, and pomegranate [15]. Some of the medicinal herb mentioned, pomegranate is one of the plants that have been studied many effects such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, antioxidants, and neuroprotective [16][17][18][19]. Pomegranate peel possesses higher content of polyphenols.…”
