Nickel Content of Plasma, Urine and Hair in Contact Dermatitis

Abstract: The nickel (Ni) concentrations of blood plasma, urine and scalp hair do not differ between hypersensitive and non-hypersensitive subjects. Those who are occupationally exposed have about ten times the control content of nickel in the plasma, urine and hair, whether hypersensitive or not. During vacations the Ni contents of their plasmas and urines decrease sharply. Oral administration of only 5 mg Ni (as the sulphate) increases the Ni concentration of plasma and urine to ten times the normal for more than the … Show more

“…2). Ingestion of an additional 5 mg Ni2 + (nickel sulphate solution) was studied in the volun- teer with and without simultaneous ingestion of DDC, the 5 mg Ni 2 + increased the nickel concentration in his urine within a few hours from about 1 to about 10 f.lg Ni/1 similarly to an identical increase in the nickel concentration of his blood plasma (Spruit & Bongaarts 1977). With simultaneous ingestion of DDC the 5 mg Ni2+ increased the nickel concentration to 100-200 f.lg Ni/1 urine within a few hours (Fig.…”

“…The sampling of urine has been described in a previous article in this journal . Nickel concentrations in urine and hair were determined by a direct analysis with a Varian AA5 and CRA63 electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer with a BC6 simultaneous background corrector (Spruit & Bongaarts 1977). The calculation of nickel concentration in 24-h urines and the evaluation of the activity of the eczema have been described before .…”

“…These authors concluded that the nickel content of serum and urine depend on environmental nickel. In a recent study, Spruit & Bongaarts (1977) demonstrated increased urinary nickel for more than 24 h following the administration of 5.0 mg. nickel to two healthy volunteers. In the present study, the oral administration of 5.6 mg. nickel was followed by an increased nickel excretion over 2-3 days.…”
