Nigerian propolis: chemical composition, antioxidant activity and α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition

Abstract: Propolis is an attractive natural ingredient to design health products due to its pharmacological effects. Our chemical investigation of a polar extract of Nigerian propolis (NP) led the isolation and identification of five isoflavonoids (1-4, 6), one diarylpropane (5) and one prenylated flavanone (7) by the combination of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques. Compounds 1, 4 and 7 were found to be the main markers in NP (8.0, 5.0 and 4.0 mg/g of dry extract, respectively). Moreover, NP and its phenolic… Show more

“…The negative mode LC-HRESI-MS spectrum of the compound (Supplementary material F, Table 2) Hz, H-4b) typical of a flavan or an isoflavan moiety. 6,10 There were also two methoxy group protons at 3.75 and 3.77 (each 3H, s) ppm. The 13 C spectrum (Supplementary material C-G, Table 1) showed a total of 17 signals composed of six aromatic CH, two quaternary aromatic carbons, four phenolic, two methylene carbons at 70.2 and 31.6, one methine at 31.6 and two methoxy carbons.…”

“…[1][2] Propolis from different parts and regions of the World have shown diversity in constituents and bioactivities. [3][4][5] Although Nigerian propolis samples have been investigated for their phytochemical constituents, [6][7][8] the diversity observed in these studies has necessitated a further investigation of the Nigerian red propolis from Bonny in Rivers State. This is to isolate more bioactive compounds and assay them against some disease pathogens.…”

“…Substitution of ring B to position C-3 instead of C2 produces the isoflavones (F5), isoflavanones (F6), and other moieties such as isoflavans (Structure F7) and pterocarpans (Structure F8). Many flavonoids have been identified in propolis; recent examples include isosativan, (2 -hydroxy-7,4 -dimethoxyisoflavan), liquiritigenin (45), isoliquiritigenin, formononetin (46), vestitol (21), neovestitol, medicarpin, 7-O-neovestitol, pinobanksin (47), pinocembrin, chrysin, and pinobanksin-3-O-acetate, astrapterocarpan, 3,8-dihydroxy-9-methoxy-pterocarpan, broussonin B, 8-prenylnaringenin (20), and gerontoxanthone H (12) [37][38][39].…”

“…Some of the compounds isolated from propolis are reported to have shown medicinal properties. For example, some flavonoids isolated from Nigerian propolis (astrapterocarpan, 3,8-dihydroxy-9-methoxy-pterocarpan, vesticarpan, medicarpin, vestitol, broussonin B, and 8-prenylnaringenin (20)) [39] or Bolivian propolis (3-prenyl-p-coumaric acid, kaempferol 3-methyl ether, and kaempferol 7-O-methyl ether) [63], were reported to have antioxidant properties.…”
