Non-Newtonian Viscosity Modeling of Crude Oils—Comparison Among Models

Abstract: The presence of precipitated wax or even just low temperatures may induce non-Newtonian rheological behavior in crude oils. Such behavior can be found at operating conditions, for instance, in reservoirs at deep-water conditions. Therefore, reliable rheological models for crude oils applicable over the wide range of conditions the fluid may encounter are essential for a large number of oil technology applications. Such models must also be composition dependent, as many applications require predicting the rheol… Show more

“…Under typical circumstances, petroleum fluids might behave as Newtonian fluids, but in the case of heavy oils, these tend to behave as non-Newtonian fluids. 4 Viscosity data for heavy oils, such as Canadian heavy oil and bitumen, 2,5,6 Mexican heavy oil, 7−9 or others, 10,11 are easily found in the literature. Although not as extensive, some rheological behavior of heavy crude oils has also been reported by different authors.…”

“…In this sense, the knowledge of the rheological properties is essential for the economically viable production of these non-conventional resources. Under typical circumstances, petroleum fluids might behave as Newtonian fluids, but in the case of heavy oils, these tend to behave as non-Newtonian fluids . Viscosity data for heavy oils, such as Canadian heavy oil and bitumen, ,, Mexican heavy oil, or others, , are easily found in the literature.…”

“…Although conventional oils mostly behave as Newtonian fluids, heavy and extra-heavy crude oils may exhibit a non-Newtonian behavior. , This means that under different strain rates, as might occur during porous media flow of different capillaries, the crude oil viscosity will change with shear (e.g., shear-thinning of paraffinic oils). Molecular theory simulations , of spherical Lennard-Jones (LJ) chains demonstrate that at equilibrium, the LJ chain fluid may have a significant degree of initial entrapment, this initial equilibrium state is responsible for the higher initial viscosity associated with the first Newtonian plateau.…”
