“…When seeds of broad bean (Vicia faba) were submerged in stagnant water for 12 to 96 hours, there occurred a progressive increase in frequency of chromosome aberrations which reached its maximum after 96-hour soaking (RIEGER and MICHAELIS 1958). Further work by RIEGER's group showed that the soaking water of broad bean contained ethanol which was shown to induce chromosome structural changes in the root tips of the same species (automutagenesis) (RIEGER and MICHAELIS 1960;RIEGER et al 1975). Since ethanol is the compound most commonly produced by plant tissues under partial anoxia, it might well be responsible for chromosome structural changes in cultures growing under reduced oxygen availability.…”

“…50 cells per slide (accord. toRieger et al 1975). The frequencies of chromatid aberrations, 102 abnormal seedlings, inhibited root emergence and their deformation were observed which agrees with the report ofMurata et al (1981).…”

“…Less is known about the possible mutagenic effects of alcohol intake in man. Ethanol produces chromatid aberrations in Vicia faba roots, a possible indicator of mutagenic effect (RIEGER et al 1975), but in vitro treatment of human peripheral blood lymphocytes with ethanol has given controversial results. An elevation of chromatid breaks has been reported by BREGMAN (1971), whereas others have found no increase (CADOTTE et al 1973;.…”
