Cylindrical and spherical amplitude modulations of dust acoustic (DA) solitary wave envelopes in a strongly coupled dusty plasma containing nonthermal distributed ions are studied. Employing a reductive perturbation technique, a modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation including the geometrical effect is derived. The influences of nonthermal ions, polarization force, and the geometries on the modulational instability conditions are analyzed and the possible rogue wave structures are discussed in detail. It is found that the spherical DA waves are more structurally stable to perturbations than the cylindrical ones. Possible applications of these theoretical findings are briefly discussed.

The nonlinear properties of two dimensional low-frequency electrostatic excitations of charged dust particles (or defects) are studied in a collisionless, unmagnetized dusty plasma. A fully ionized three-component model plasma consisting of kappa distributed electrons, Maxwellian ions, and negatively charged massive dust grains is considered. In this regard, the well known reductive perturbation technique is used to the hydrodynamical equations and the Poisson equation, obtaining the cylindrical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (CKP) equation. A parametric investigation indicates that the structural characteristics of these nonlinear excitations (width, amplitude) are significantly affected by the plasma nonthermality as well as by the relevant plasma parameters, such as dust concentration and dust temperature.

The modulational instability (MI) of ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) in a two-component non-Maxwellian hot plasma with Cairns distributed electrons is investigated. Using the derivative expansion method, a non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is obtained. The criterion for MI, which occurs for small values of the carrier wavenumber, is obtained. It is found that non-thermal parameter modifies the criteria for MI instability. The analytical solutions of NLSE in the form of various types of freak waves, including the Peregrine soliton, the Akhmediev breather, and the Kuznetsov-Ma breather, are examined. The effects of the non-thermal parameter as well as ion-to-electron temperature ratio on the rogue wave profile are discussed. Our results should be relevant to wave propagation stability. Non-thermal models may play an increasingly important role in predicting complex plasma behaviour and understanding the underlying physical processes.
