Normative Isometric Hip Muscle Force Values Assessed by a Manual Dynamometer

Abstract: Objective: Hand-held dynamometry is a quantitative and accessible means of determining the isometric force of muscle groups. Methods: A total of 52 women aged 20–29 years with no complaints of hip pain who were sedentary or sporadically active and had a body mass index of 18.5–24.99 kg/m2 were included. All participants underwent bilateral assessments using hand-held dynamometry of the flexor, extensor, adductor, and abductor muscles as well as the internal and external rotator hip muscles. All hip movements … Show more

“…Thus, the knowledge of reference values is a necessity to achieve the above goals. Muscle performance can be measured by different dynamometers, such as the isokinetic dynamometers [ 4 ], or the manual dynamometers [ 5 ]. Although the use of the isokinetic dynamometers is considered as the gold standard instrument to evaluate muscle strength [ 6 ], these devices remain very expensive, bulky, and require trained personnel to handle them and interpret the results.…”

“…However, this reproducibility depends on the model of dynamometers used during the assessment [ 9 ]. In addition, although many authors propose reference values according to anthropometric data [ 5 , 7 , 10 ], these reference values depend on the model of the manual dynamometer and the calibration of the instrument [ 9 ]. So, the use of manual dynamometers remains limited as the comparison of the results between models is complicated.…”

“…We will also measure hip flexor strength with a handheld dynamometer, a reliable and validated metric which has been used in several different populations [ 38 ]. Because the standardisation of isometric strength values according to body weight has been proven as feasible, this test allows normal patterns to be established and for the impact of injuries to be assessed in terms of muscle strength loss [ 39 ].…”

“…Foi observado uma diminuição da força dos músculos abdutores do quadril bilateralmente nas participantes do estudo, uma vez que apresentaram força muscular isométrica dos abdutores de 11,23% do peso corporal. No estudo de Alvarenga et al, 2018 em que valores de força dos músculos do quadril em mulheres saudáveis foram determinados através da dinamometria manual, observou-se força muscular isométrica dos abdutores de 16,85% do peso corporal (ALVARENGA et al, 2019).…”
