Novel Basic Block of Multilevel Inverter Using Reduced Number of On-State Switches and Cascaded Circuit Topology

Abstract: In this paper a basic block of novel topology of multilevel inverter is proposed. The proposed approach significantly requires reduced number of dc voltage sources and power switches to attain maximum number of output voltage levels. By connecting basic blocks in series a cascaded multilevel topology is developed. Each block itself is also a multilevel inverter. Analysis of proposed topology is carried out in symmetric as well as asymmetric operating modes. The topology is investigated through computer simulat… Show more

“…The common advantage of asymmetric topology is that it is able to generate a high level of output voltage by using the same structure of symmetric topology [15,16]; as an example, asymmetric topology with different DC voltages, i.e., Vdc1 = Vdc, Vdc2 = 2Vdc, Vdc3 = 4Vdc, Vdc4 = 8Vdc as compared to the DC source voltage of symmetric topology, i.e., Vdc1=Vdc2=Vdc3. Asymmetric topology has different values of DC source voltage and the modulation technique is complex and the level can be upgraded up to two levels higher.…”

“…One of the leading advances for MLIs is the improvement in power electronics which have been used to fulfill the requirements for many applications for low/medium voltage electrical utility [4]. MLI is a good solution for improving the performance of many industrial applications such as renewable energy systems [5], motor drives [6], uninterruptable power supplies (UPS), flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) [7], etc.…”

“…Flying capacitor type is not widely used because of the presence of high number of capacitors, meanwhile, diode clamped type is high cost of implementation compared to flying capacitor and cascaded H-bridge types [6]. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter is simpler than diode clamped and flying capacitor types due to several advantages such as automatic voltage sharing, low switching stresses, low switching redundancy and requirement of least number of components, lower voltage of capacitors and diodes [7]. In Cascaded Hbridge multilevel inverter, only three output voltage levels can be produced.…”
