Novel Insights and Perspectives into Weakly Coupled ReS2 toward Emerging Applications

Abstract: The rise of transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials has enormous implications for the scientific community and beyond. Among TMDs, ReS 2 has received significant attention regarding its extraordinary properties in all fields during the past 5 years. Most notably, the weak interlayer coupling feature enables bulk ReS 2 to behave as electronically and vibrationally decoupled monolayers, leading to an obvious layer-independent character in various properties. Because of the extremely weak interlayer coupl… Show more

“…ReS 2 is an emerging new 2D material, unlike 2H TMDs, crystallizing in 1T′ structure with a triclinic symmetry. [ 23–25 ] This structural feature endows ReS 2 with many novel properties, such as strong in‐plane anisotropic properties and weak interlayer coupling, [ 26–29 ] which bring it tremendous application potential in logic inverters, transistors, polarization‐dependent photodetectors. [ 30–33 ] Different from most 1T′ TMDs which are metastable phase, [ 34 ] the 1T′ ReS 2 is much stable in ambient air and even acid/base.…”

“…[23,43] Due to its low structural symmetry, the vertical growth of ReS 2 is highly spontaneous with appropriate growth conditions. [20,43] And the subsequent growth proceeds along the direction from initial nucleation, leading to vertical separate nanopetals. As the growth time extends, these vertical ReS 2 nanopetals will coalesce to reduce the surface energy and hence, transform into the nanoflower morphology.…”

“…The electrochemical water-splitting through hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has been considered as a sustainable way for Despite some reports on the HER properties of ReS 2 , it remains challenging to further improve its catalytic performance. [20] First, precise control of the edge sites and elucidating their role in HER has not been realized so far. This is due to that the correlation between the structural evolution and growth process of ReS 2 remains unclear.…”
